DUMBING UP AMERICA! Truth or Politics.
Through my eyes, I can see,
What America refuses to tell me,
Truth or Politics, do I dare ask,
Or do I just complete my task?
Children Stolen, Children Sold,
Federal dollars, Stipends, or Gold,
Truth or Politics, do I dare ask,
Or do I just complete my task?
Authority, Authority, you failed to follow,
My Civil Rights the Government Swallow,
Truth or Politics, do I dare ask,
Or do I just complete my task?
Basket Hold Restraint, Rifton Chair,
Prone or Supine, Position Dear?
Truth or Politics, do I dare ask,
Or do I just complete my task?
Seclusion, Seclusion, Isolation Room,
Autism, Autism, they die soon,
Truth or Politics, do I dare ask,
Or do I just complete my task?
Psychotropic drugs to ruin their minds,
Their Heart, their Soul, they no longer find,
Truth or Politics, do I dare ask,
Or do I just complete my task?
Do I lie beaten, or do I rise?
One moment please, while I wipe my eyes,
Truth or Politics, do I dare ask,
Or do I just complete my task?

THE CIRCLE OF FRIENDS-EAST BAY IS A PILOT PROGRAM IN BARRINGTON, RI THAT WAS FIRST SUGGESTED BY DAKOTA JACOBOWITZ DURING HIS 7TH YEAR AT BARRINGTON MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HAS NOW BECOME REALITY
Dakota Jacobowitz had a dream that he would begin a program at Barrington Middle School called the “Buddy Program” in which new students entering the middle school would be paired with a seasoned student as a mentor and buddy. His idea was based on his experiences at the middle school last year when he entered the 7th grade after experiencing difficulty transitioning back to school after being at home for almost 2 years. Dakota envisioned a “buddy program” that would include all children, with and without special needs. He has had several experiences with children diagnosed with special needs (including his 11 year old brother diagnosed with PDD-NOS). Dakota lives with his own issues and struggles to cope each day. Dakota developed compassion and understanding for other students with similar challenges. As a young man with experience and knowledge of how difficult it can be to fit in and be accepted, to feel different and depressed, Dakota lends himself to helping other students transition with ease. Middle school is a difficult period for students as they mature, a buddy can lend an ear and guidance. A year later, after expressing his idea to Principal Richard Wheeler of Barrington Middle School, the Barrington Recreation Department, John Taylor, and SEAC developed a pilot program called “Circle of Friends- East Bay” in which all youth are welcomed to socialize, join in fun activities, and go on field trips. Peer mentors will play a vital role in the pilot program. Congratulations to Dakota for sharing his dream with Barrington Middle School and Principal Wheeler last year. Dakota would like to see the program grow and take place in other towns throughout Rhode Island. He has already put in a word with Education Commissioner Deborah A. Gist. Dakota, thank you for using your experiences and knowledge to help other students cope with school and life issues.
